What are the nerve roots of the cervical plexus?

C1 - C4

What are the branches of the cervical plexus?

Greater auricular n

Transverse cervical n

Lesser occipital n

Supraclavicular n

Ansa cervicalis

Phrenic

Phrenic nerve

C3, 4, 5

Innervates: diaphragm, fibrous pericardium, mediastinal pleura

Course: begins at the Lat. border of the ant. Scalenes, deep to the prevertebral layer of deep cervical fascia and into the thorax.

Lesser occipital nerve

C2

Innervate: sin over the post.lateral scalp (posterior to the ear)

Course: Leaves ventral rami, hooks around the accessory nerve and emerges post. to SCM traveling superiorly. At the occiput it pierces the deep fascia and terminates.

What's the relevance of C2 neuralgia?

C2 or occipital neuralgia presents and chronic pain in the upper neck, back of the head and behind the eyes. It's caused by damage to either occipital nerves or occipital artery.

Ansa Cervicalis

C1, 2, 3

Innervates: infrahyoid mm

Great Auricular Nerve

C2 - 3

Innervates: cutaneous innervation of skin over parotid gland, mastoid process and outer ear.

Course: Arises from C2-3, winds around the post. border of SCM, perforates the deep fascia and ascends to the parotid gland.

Supraclavicular nerve

C3 - 4

Innervate:

Medial branch - SC joint

Intermediate branch - skin over pecoralis major, deltoid

Lateral branch - skin over upper post. shoulder

Course: Emerges at Erb's pt underneath SCM. It moves inferiorly in the post. cervical triangle and as it approaches the clavicle it branches.

Greater Occipital Nerve

C2

Course: Arises from 1st and 2nd cervical vertebral. It ascends after emerging from suboccipital triangle beneath
