What does reasonably practicable mean

Means the balancing the level of risk against the measures needed to control the real risk in terms of money, time or trouble. However you do not need to take action if it would be grossly disproportionate to the level of the risk.

What is suitable and sufficient

• a proper check was made

• you asked who might be affected

• you dealt with the obvious significant risks, taking in to account the number of peoplewho could be involved.

• the precautions are reasonable, and the remaining risks are low.

• you involved your workers or their representatives in the process.

Health surveillance criteria

• when there is an identifiable disease or adverse health condition related to the work concerned.

• valid techniques are available to detect indications of the disease or condition.

• there is a reasonable likelihood that the disease or condition may occur under the particular conditions of the work.

• where surveillance is likely to help protect the health and safety of the employees to be covered.
