Instrumental music that is set to a story or poem, the story is told through the music for the use of greater emotion ex. "fantastic symphony" -Hector Berlioz Pamphlets were handed out as to the story of the music, where a man does opium, falls asleep and has vivid dreams of his lover, until the end when he dies in his dream surrounded by witches and sees his lover dancing on his grave. |

Similar to an opera, there are characters and a plot, however there are no interaction between the characters as well as no costumes, the focus of these are religious. ex. "Messiah" G.F. Handel Describes God speaking to the Shepherds before Jesus' birth, telling them of his birth that is about to occur |
