Antiarthritic Drugs |
NSAIDs, Glucocorticoids, Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) |
Most common DMARDs |
Methotrexate |
Indication: Rheumatoid Arthritis Action: reduce joint destruction and slow disease progression by interfering in immune and inflammatory responses. Nursing considerations: • Lifelong therapy; treats symptoms but disease continues to progress • Must treat RA aggressively: start a DMARD early - within 3 months of RA |
Anti-gout Drugs |
NSAIDs, Glucocorticoids, Anti uric acid agents |
Hypouremic agent |
Allopurinol |
Indication: Gout Action: inhibits xanthine oxidase to prevent uric acid from forming Nursing considerations: • Monitor for side effects of leukopenia, fever, and rash • Dosage must be individualized • Teach to avoid foods high in purine (beer, wine, cheeses, beans, anchovies, sardines, liver, kidneys, and cream). |
Drugs for Bone Health |
Calcium, Vitamin D, Calcitonin, Biphosphonates |
To increase calcium |
Calcium, Vitamin D |
To help decrease calcium |
Calcitonin, Biphosphonates |
Calcium Salts |
Calcium acetate, calcium carbonate (Tums), calcium citrate, calcium gluconate |
Indication: Hypocalcemia, dietary supplement Action: supplement calcium Nursing Considerations: • Monitor for hypercalcemia • Monitor for signs and symptoms of fatigue and weakness Calcium acts like sedative. Things are going to slow down. |
Helps us activate Calcium |
Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol, Hypocalcemia, Vitamin D deficiency) |
Indication: Hypoparathyroidism, Hypocalcemia, Vitamin D Deficiency Action: Supplement Vitamin D stores Nursing considerations: Monitor for toxicity - far soluble (osteoporosis, hypercalcemia) With sufficient exposure to sunlight, the body can manufacture all the Vitamjn D it needs. Therapeutic responses to Vitamin D require adequate calcium intake. Encourage intake of foods that are high in calcium. |
Most common biphosphonate that decreases bone resorption by osteoclasts |
Alendronate |
Indication: Osteoporosis Action: Decreases bone resorption by osteoclasts Nursing considerations: Side effect: Esophagitis > contraindicated in clients with existing esophageal disorder. • Take with a full glass of water • Remain upright for 30 minutes after takjng (do not take supine or lie down after taking) • If difficulty or pain with swallowing, or heartburn develop, clients should discontinue the medication and contact their provider. |
A great example of centrally acting muscle relaxer |
Baclofen |
Indication: Multiple sclerosis,Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury Action: acts within the spinal cord to suppress hyperactive reflexes involved in regulation of muscle movement. Nursing considerations: • Monitor for CNS depression • Do not discontinue abruptly - need to taper baclofen in one to 2 weeks. |
