How many muscles are in the human body?
Over 600
What are muscles?
Bundles of muscle fibers held together by connective tissue, that are also connected to nerves
What are the functions of muscles?
Movement, produce heat, produce energy, posture, & protection
What are the 3 types of muscle?
Viseral (Smooth), Cardiac, and Skeletal
What is the purpose of Cardiac muscle?
Form the walls of the heart, contraction to circulate blood. It's an involuntary muscle.
What's the purpose of Viseral (Smooth) Muscle?
Organs, movement of Digistive, Respiratory, & Blood vessels
What is the purpose of Skeletal muscle?
Attached to bone for movement. Voluntary. Contraction causes movement.
What are tendons?
Strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
What do ligaments do?
Attach Bone to Bone
What are the two types of muscle attachment and how,do they differ?
Origin- End that doesn't move
Insertion- End that moves
What is Fascia?
The sheet-like membrane that covers and protects muscle
What is excitability?
Muscle response to nerve stimulus
What is contractibility?
Muscle fibers shorten when stimulated
What is extensibility?
Muscle can be stretched
What is elasticity?
Muscle can return to original shape
What is abduction?
Moving a limb away from the midline
What is addiction?
Moving a limb closer to the midline
What is Flexion?
Bending of a limb
What is extension?
Extension of a limb
What is muscle tone?
When muscles are slightly contracted at all times
What is atrophy?
Loss of muscle
What is hypertrophy?
Excessive muscle. Or too much muscle
What is contracture?
When flexor muscles aren't used and the muscle fibers shorten. Happens in hands, wrists, knees, elbows, feet
What does Range of Motion do? What are the different types?
Range of motion Prevents: Bone loss, Muscle loss, Stiffness or Contractures, Improves circulation and Maintains independence.
Types:
-Active: patient does
-Active-Assisted: Patient needs assistance
-Passive: Health-care worker does movement for patient
What is Myalgia?
Muscle pain
What do Sprains effect?
Tendons and Ligaments
What is Muscular Dystrophy?
A hereditary disorder, progressive wasting away of muscle tissue
What is a Strain?
Over-stretch/use of a muscle
What is Bursitis?
Inflammation of a Bursa (fluid-filled sac covering muscle near joints)
