Declaration of Independence

- 2 reasons for writing

- 1 way it influenced government

Reasons for writing:

1. People are born with certain rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness) and government is to protect those rights

2. British government behaved unfairly: high taxes and no representation

3. Colonies intended to form new, independent country with own government

Primary Author: Thomas Jefferson

Influenced government:

The Age of Exploration: Two factors that contribute to European desire to explore North America

1. Had availability of maps and charts

2. Find a new passage to the Far East for trade

3. Find gold, silver, and other valuables

4. Claim new lands for their countries

5. Convert people to Christianity

6. Adventure

7. To see if Asia could be reached by sailing West.

Causes of the Civil War

1. Slavery.

2. Ways of life/economy-North: large cities, factories; South: plantations worked by slaves

3. Free labor vs. Slave labor

- North: free labor- workers chose where they worked and earned wages

-South: slave laborers- not free to leave, food/lodging, but no wages

4. Sate's rights.

- North: no state has right to secede

-South: yes, can secede.

Fascism. How did WW1 contribute to rise of fascism?

Fascism: system of government dominated by one strong leader, often a dictator

Fascists: seek to elevate their country by establishing strong, national identity; want to eradicate (real or perceived threats) by foreign influence (e.g. another country or culture different from own) --> Extreme nationalism.

WWI - 1914-1918

Industrial countries of Europe (France, Russia, Great Britain--Triple Entente): competitive and hungry for more power, expand empires and formed alliances to protect selves from each other--> alliances brought other countries into the war

Treaty of Versailles- ended WW1 and severely punished Germany: gave up territory, army reduced, debt to nations

This harshness on Germany led to election of Adolf Hitler, which then led to WW2

Fascism Part 2: How did fascism lead to WW2?

WW2 1939-1945

Germany, Italy, Japan conquest of neighboring nations in late 1930s.

Allies (Britain, France, US) tried to negotiate/avoid war, but Germany broke promises. Dictators in Germany (Hitler), Japan (Tojo), Russia (Stalin) and Italy (Mussolini) promoted fanatical national pride, installed themselves as dictators, created police networks that enforced their ideas of government.

- all wanted to invade other countries and expand empires

- Hitler/Holocaust: systematic attempt to exterminate all Jews simply because they were Jews

Ecosystems

- Name 2

- Describe Food Chain in 1of 2

Ecosystem: how plants and animals within a habitat interact with each other. A community of living organisms (plants, animals, microbes) in conjunction with nonliving components of their environment (air, water, soil), interacting as a system.

Types of ecosystems: coral reef, river, pond, forest, desert.

Food Chain: series of plants and animals that are linked together because they feed on each other (e.g. grass uses sun's energy to make food, field mouse eats grass, hawks eat field mouse)

Food web = network of food chains

1. Forest Ecosystem: grass (producer) is eaten by deer (primary consumer) and deer is eaten by tiger (secondary consumer) (food chain).

2. Pond Ecosystem: grasses--> grasshopper-->frog-->snake-->hawk

Geology

2 processes that cause breakdown of earth

1 change caused by tectonic plates

Processes that cause breakdown and deconstruction of the earth: Natural erosion and weathering

1. Erosion: water runs down hill, takes dirt and rock with it

- Rivers and streams that carry tons of dirt and silt (often for long distances and then run into lakes/oceans)

2. Weathering: e.g. wind blowing first across the surface of the land (especially when not protected by a covering of vegetation)

Earthquake: sudden, violent shifting movements in the earth's crust that cause the land to tremble and shake and sometimes crack open

- caused when tectonic plates that make up the earth's surface collide, separate, or scrape against one another

Phase Changes

phases of matter and how a substance can change phases

States of Matter

1. Solid - fixed size/shape (e.g. rock, ice)

2. Liquid - takes shape of container because molecules are moving (e.g. water, milk)

3. Gas - no particular shape, can expand indefinitely because molecules are further apart and moving more rapidly than liquid (e.g. air, steam)

To change states: add or take away energy/heat (will cause molecules to move more/less quickly)

Circulatory System

Lungs- inhale: pull air into the body to get oxygen, transfer oxygen to the bloodstream; exhale: remove carbon dioxide from the body. Also act as filters to prevent germs and dust in the air from getting into the bloodstream.

Arteries- blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to other parts of the body

Veins - blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart

Capillaries- tiny blood vessels that connect arteries and veins. Allows food and oxygen to pass from the blood to the body's cells through their thin walls. Also pick up waste product that build up when oxygen and food are used by cells.

Levers: The different classes and what you would use to lift something heavy.

Lever: a bar/pole that rests on a point called a fulcrum; a simple machine that makes it easier to move objects (e.g. seasaw).

First Class Lever = Fulcrum in the middle, between the weight and the force (e.g. crowbar, removing nail with a hammer.

Second Class Lever = Resistance in the middle, between fulcrum and force (e.g. wheel barrow)

Third Class Lever = Effort in middle, resistance is between the fulcrum and the weight (e.g. tweezers)

FRE 123 for what's in the middle (Fulcrum, Resistance, or Effort)

Mitochondria

- where is it located in cells and why is it useful

Found in cytoplasm of pant and animal cells; bean shaped with inner membranes

contains enzymes that act to change food into energy that can be used by the cell

cell parts only in plants: cell wall (rigid outer layer made of cellulose, supports and protects cell); chloroplast (green, usually oval shaped, uses energy from the sun to make food for the plant/photosynthesis)

Nucleus: large, oval shape, controls cells activities

cell membrane: selectively permeable, controls movement of materials in/out of cell

Vacuole: fluid filled sacs; store food, water, waste (especially in plants)
