What were the effects of the eruption?

-It produced a huge pyroclastic flow which trapped 250 people on it's slopes.


-50+ deaths.


-40+ injured.


-40-50cm of toxic, volcanic ash covered the mountain.


-Visibility reduced.

Responses to the eruption?

1000 Japanese rescue workers set out to rescue hikers.


However the effort was halted as the volcano continued to shoot out toxic gases.

Why was there no warning?

-Volcanologists have pointed out that as it was eruption made up of super-heated steam and ash it was difficult to predict.


-There was also no earth movements or changes on the mountain surface.


-However some seismologists noticed an increase in seismic activity.
