1000 Japanese rescue workers set out to rescue hikers. However the effort was halted as the volcano continued to shoot out toxic gases. |

Why was there no warning? |
-Volcanologists have pointed out that as it was eruption made up of super-heated steam and ash it was difficult to predict. -There was also no earth movements or changes on the mountain surface. -However some seismologists noticed an increase in seismic activity. |
