Amniocentesis
-Extracts amniotic fluid and fetal cells for culture.

-Uses an ultrasound guided needle that goes through the abdomen and into the uterus.

Chorionic Villu Sampling (CVS)
-In which an ultrasound-guided tube is threaded into the uterus to pick up cells from the chorion (sac surrounding the fetus). May also be done with a needle.

-Done between 8th and 11th weeks; Invasive and extremely risky. 1 in 100 miscarriage rate.

-Useful for early warning, however.
Fetal Blood Sampling (FBS)
-Collects fetal blood from the umbilical cord.

-Used to diagnose a wide variety of genetic diseases.

-Done after 18 weeks; Invasive
Ultrasound/Sonogram
-Bounces sound waves to produce a visual image of the uterus, fetus, and placenta.

-Not very accurate and can only read the "big things."

-May be done at any time; non-invasive
