Moral

- Deliberately setting up websites containing incorrect information. People rely on information thinking it's correct.

- Bullying. Chat rooms, email, blogs, text message. Problem especially in young people.

- Inappropriate websites. People able to view inappropriate material. Pornography, Racism, Violent videos, How to make explosives, etc.

- Using email to give bad news when explaining face to face would be better. ( Redundancy, Demotion, Firing, etc)

- Spreading rumours. Easy using the internet. Tell a few people in a chat room and it will spread.

Normally, rumours are untrue and used to cause another person distress. Difficult to identify culprit over the internet.

Ethical

- Plagiarism. Copying material without referencing source of information.

- Spam. People waste time deleting spam if it gets through filter.

- Companies monitoring staff use of internet and emails. Some read staff's personal emails.

- Using someone's wireless internet connection without permission. It's possible to connect to open networks, slowing down network of legitimate users.

- Using photo editing software to distort reality. Distorting reality means you can no longer believe what you see in videos, t.v., newspapers, magazines and on websites.

Social

- Privacy issues. Social networking sites, e-commerce sites, email monitoring at work, etc., all erode user privacy.

- Gambling addiction. Bets can now be made using the internet, making it easier for more people to gamble away their money.

- Obesity. Using internet for long periods of time is not healthy. Before the internet there were many activities that involved physical activity.

- Addiction to computer games. Children spend hours playing games, lose social skills and school work can suffer.

- Gap between haves and have nots widens. Internet widens gap between rich and poor countries/individuals.

- Organisations move call centres abroad. Can pay less wages. Get the same service provided cheaply using internet.

- Growth of e-commerce. Shops may have to close, some city centres look desolate.

Control over internet

No one owns internet, it's for everyone.

Little control over content of material on the internet. Governments have started controlling what can and can't be seen.

No control over who can access internet. Unless special software used, children can easily gain access to illicit sites.

Lack of 'policing' on the internet. Information not checked to make sure it's accurate. Up to users to check accuracy of material.

Availablity of offensive, illegal, unethical material on the Internet

Pornography. Pornographic images and videos on internet. Laws covering production and distribution of material. Most material comes from other countries where it's perfectly legal, not much that can be done to stop it. Special software to filter out this material, hard to be completely sure.

Paedophilia. Paedophiles use internet to distribute pornographic pictures of young children. Also, they attempt to lure children into meeting them after speaking to them in chat rooms.

Violence/offensive content. A pack of hounds attacking a fox may not be offensive to members of a hunt, but it might be to animal lovers. Whether material is offensive or not depends of the person.

Censorship

Many countries aren't democratic and leaders of these countries don't allow free passage of information to and from these countries.

They have control over media, only allow news that shows government in favourable light.

Censorship by the government allows them more control over what people can and can't access.

Positive effects on communities

- Blogs and chats set up to allow communities to discuss local issues. Planning, problem gangs, community events, etc.

- Housebound members of community are less isolated as people can contact them to see if everything is ok.

- Opportunities for employment can be advertised with community on local websites.

- Local citizens advice website can be set up to deal with problems residents have.

Negative effects on communities

- Lack of social interaction. People spend more time browsing internet, playing computer games and communicating with 'cyber' friends rather than spending time in community.

- Local shops shut. More good ordered using internet, local shops lose business and have to close.
