What are Moon Phases?
|
The shapes of the Moon are called Phases and they repeat every month or so as the Moon makes one full trip, (called the orbit), around the Earth.

The Earth goes round the Sun once every year and the Moon goes round the Earth once every month.
The Sun, Moon and Earth lie along a straight line. So sometimes not all of the Sunlight reaches the Moon because the Earth is in the way. This is called a Lunar Eclipse. |

During a New Moon, the Sun is shining on the side of the Moon that we can't see, and the side that we can see is completely in shadow.

Why does the Moon change shape?

Depending upon where the Moon is in its orbit around the Earth you will see different amounts of light reaching it and so you will see a different shape.
