Data
Facts "in a form that can be read, used, and manipulated by a computer." Ex: data would be the raw ingredients of a food recipe (eggs, milk, sugar, etc.)
Information
Collected and transformed data that communicates meaning. Ex: information would be the finished product produced from a recipe (soufflé)
Process
The sequence of steps that manipulates and transforms data into information. Ex: process is the actual execution of recipe steps (sift one cup of flour into a large mixing bowl, etc.)
Fundamental Computer Components
All computer systems have the following 4 components: Input, Process, Secondary Storage, Output
Column (Bar) Charts
Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a column chart. Useful for showing data changes over a period of time or for illustrating comparisons among items.
Line Charts
Data that is arranged in columns or rows on a worksheet can be plotted in a line chart. Can display continuous data over time, set against a common scale, and are therefore ideal for showing trends in data at equal intervals. Category data on the horizontal axis, value data on the vertical axis
Pie Charts
Data that is arranged in one column or row only on a worksheet can be plotted in a pie chart. Show the size of items in one data series proportional to the sum of its items. Data points are displayed as a percentage of a whole pie.
Data points
individual values plotted in a chart and represented by bars, columns, lines, pie slices, dots, etc.
Scatter Plot Charts
data that is arranged in columns and rows on a worksheet can be plotted in an xy (scatter) chart. Show the relationship between two groups of numbers as one series of xy coordinates. Commonly used for displaying and comparing numeric values (scientific, statistical, and engineering data)
Data Series
A group of related data values belonging to a single category, usually separated by a time period. Each data series in a chart typically has a unique color or pattern. Can plot one or more data series in a chart expect pie charts which have only one data series
Essential Chart Elements
Most charts must include clear titles and labels in order to be effective. Legends aren't required for all charts, usually needed to distinguish between data series.
