Melody

A sequence of notes in a coherent unit; a tune.

Unison

When two or more voices or instruments play the exact same notes play at a exact same time.

Harmony

When two or more different notes are played at the same time.

Pitch

How low or high a sound is.

Notes

The smallest unit of music. Defines the pitch and duration.

Staff

Five sets of horizontal lines on and between pitch is written to indicate pitch.

Frequency

The number of sound waves per second that define the each exact pitch.

Clefs

Signs placed at the beginning of the staff to better indicate the highness or lowness of a pitch.

Treble Clef

Also known as the G clef, used to indicate notes of a higher pitch (above middle c).

Bass clef

Also known as the F clef, used to indicate notes of a lower pitch (under middle c).

Middle C

The note that falls immediately between the bass and treble clef.

Grand staff

The result of combining the treble and bass staves.

Ledger lines

Used to indicate the notes that fall outside the staves.

Range

How high or low an instrument or voice can sound.

Duration

The length of sound or silence in music. Different durations can be combined with pitches to create melodies.

Rythym

The organization of music through time using note values and duration.

Beat

The regular, recurrent pulse that forms the background of the music.

Flag

Singe notes that are shorter than quarter notes have flags on their stems.


-eighth note has 1 flag, sixteenth note has 2 flags, thirty-second note has 3 flags.

Beams

Groups of two or more notes that are shorter in duration than a quarter note are connected by beams.

Dotted notes or rest

Place a dot after a note increases the note by half its value.

Tie

A curved line that joins two notes of the same pitch, in essence joining the duration of each into one combined duration. The second note does not sound.
