Trust Policy

Summon help, stimulate contraction, catheterise, third stage and syntometrine.

Uterine Massage

Encourage contraction and expel any blood clots which may inhibit the uterus from contracting.

Empty Bladder

The structural closeness of the uterus and bladder means that a full bladder can interfere with normal contractions and cause increased blood flow from placental site. Empty bladder = contraction.

Skin to Skin/Breastfeeding

Stimulates oxytocin to by synthesised in the hypothalamus which then is transported to the posterior pituitary gland. Released into maternal blood stream in pulsatile manner and oxytocin binds to myometrial receptors increasing intracellular calcium allowing filaments to slide over each other and shorten muscle fibres (contraction).

Second Dose of Syntometrine

500mcg Ergometrine and 5IU Oxytocin in 1ml. No more then 2 doses of ergometrine and therefore if bleeding continues further actions are required.
