Serf

An agricultural worker, especially in feudal Europe, who cultivated land belonging to a landowner, and who was bought and sold with the land

Manor

The lord’s estate, it was the economic and social center of the people’s lives.

Feudalism

The legal and social system that existed in medieval Europe, in which vassals held land from lords in exchange for military service.

Fief

A grant of Land.

Lords/Nobles

Members of the land-holding elite whooccupied a place on the social ladder just below that of the King.

Knight

Mounted soldiers who pledged theirloyalty and fought for the lord in return for control of a fief or land.
