What are the three pathogenic species that cause Schistosomiasis?
Schistosoma mansoni
S. haematobium
S. japonicum
What is the required intermediate host in Schistosomiasis?
Snails
When I say snails, you say...
Schistosomaisis!
What form of the organism develops in the snail?
Cercaria
What is the route of infection for Schistosomiasis?
Penetration of the skin
How does Schistosomiasis cause tissue damage?
Eggs of the parasite lodge in tissues/small vessels and cause circulation problems and inflammatory response.
Are Schistosomes hermaphroditic, do they separate adult sexes?
Separate - adults live in copulo in human host.
What is required of the human host to complete the Schistosome life cycle?
Disposal of human waste into snail pond.
In the human host, where are each species found?
Bowel lumen: S. mansoni and japonicum
Bladder lumen: S. haemotobium
What organ dysfunction is common with Schistosomiasis?
Hepatosplenomegaly (granuloma and Pipestem Fibrosis)
What class of organisms causes eosinophilia?
Worm/Helminth infections
How is Schistosomiasis diagnosed?
1) Eosinophilia
2) Ova in urine or stool
What causes swimmer's itch?
Schistosome Dermatitis - a non-human schistosome cercariae (usualy fowl) burrows into human host, inflammatory response causes pruritic rash
When I say Lung Fluke, you say....
Paragonimiasis
Who is the definitive host in Paragonimiasis?
Humans, dogs, pigs, rats. (Intermediate Host is a snail or crayfish.)
How are Paragonimiasis eggs passed from the definitive host?
Adults live in DH's lungs, eggs are coughed up and swallowed, then excreted.
How is Paragonimiasis contracted?
Consumption of metacercariae-containing crabs or crayfish.
What's the common name for Paragonimus westermani infection?
Lung Fluke Infection. Sx is hemoptysis, lung abscess, persistent pulmonary infiltrates.
How is Paragonimiasis diagnosed?
Eosinophilia, CXR, eggs in sputum
When I say Clonorchis, you say...
Liver Fluke!
How is Clonorchiasis contracted?
Consumption of metacercariae-containing fish.
What is required of humans to complete the Clonochis life cycle?
Contamination of fresh water with human excrement.
What are the clinical signs of Clonorchiasis?
Eosinophilia, hepatomegaly, jaundice
How is Clonorchiasis diagnosed?
Eggs in bile or feces.
Is Clonochis the only liver fluke?
No! Fasciola hepatica is a liver fluke as well.
When I say WATERCRESS, you say...
Fasciola hepatica!
What species is infamous for hosting Fasciola?
Sheep
When I say WATER CHESTNUT, you say...
Fasciolopsis buski!
What species is the definitive host for Fasciolopiasis?
Pigs are the major definitive host.
Are snails required for all trematode lifecycles?
Yes, for all human pathogens of interest.
