What is a pathogen?
it is when an microorganism, or virus or something has the capability of causing disease.
Host
organism that shelters or supports the growth of pathogens. usually a +/- relationship.
Infectious disease:
pathogen causes this disease, almost everything that is acquired from the environment is infectious.
degenerative diseases
diseases that occur from degeneration: heart disease some cancers, diabetes, autoimmune diseases
they are diseases not caused from pathogens.
What are bacteria or pathogens that grow in a host?
They are parasites.
Disease
abnormal state in which the body or one of its parts is incapable of performing its functions properly. It's malfunction. It is said that an organism has a disease when a pathogen overcomes the body's defenses.
If someone is infected by a pathogen do they develop a disease?
not always as long as their normal state is not affected they can still be considered to not have a disease.
What is pathology?
What three components makes up pathology?
Pathology is the study of diseases, in an individual
: Etiology
: Pathogenesis
:effects/tx of disease
What is Etiology?
the cause of the disease in question, Koch's postulate
What is pathogenesis
studying the development of a disease over time in an individual
Why do humans need ecoli, what is the difference btw babies and adults with respect to ecoli?
Ecoli have a normal relationship to a host, they are symbiotically aligned with.
They get food and protection, we get vit. K and protection from pathogens
Babies get vit. K injections because they are usually sterile before birth and require 36-48 hours to become sterilized.
Resident flora/microflora
Microbes that establish permanent residence either inside or on the body surface without causing disease
Ratio of human body cells vs bacteria
1:10, 30trill to 300 trillion, normal microbiota also contain bacteria, fungi, protozoa
Examples of normal microbiota in the...
GI
Oral Cavity
Skin
Vagina
Escherichia coli
Streptococcus
staphylococcus
Lactobacillus, Candida(yeast)
Microbial antagonism.
outcompete pathogens
