N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NALC) & NaOH |
Most commonly method used. NALC splits disulphide bonds and 2% NaOH is antibacterial. |
|
Trisodium phosphate (TSP) and benzalkonium chloride (Zephiran) |
TSP liquefies sputum rapidly but required a long exposure for decontamination. Z shorten the exposure time and effectively destroys many contaminants with little bactericidal effects to bacilli. |
|
Oxalic acid |
Oxalic acid for sputum collected from patients with cystic fibrosis -eliminatr mucoid strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. |
|
4% Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) |
Strong alkali acts both mucolytic and antibacterial agent. Exposure time must be limited used with caution because it can kill the Mycobacteria. |
