What are the effects of Marijuana, cocaine and alcohol?

Marijuana says HAI o a CHAP next to A FAN

How does the Nervous system work?

Stimulus- receptors- CNS- effector- response

How do neurons and glial cells communicate?

controls senses and gathers info about homeostasis through nerve impulses.

What are the 2 main parts of the nervous system and what do they do.

Central NS =controls body temp, breathing, blood pressure.

Peripheral NS= connects CNS to limbs and organs

What do sensory, motor and connector neurons do?

Sensory-converts external stimuli

Motor- forms a path for impulses to reach muscles or glands from the CNS

Connector- forms connections between neurons and act as a liaison.

Nervous system vs Endocrine system

NS= instantaneous quick responses

ES= slower responses that last longer

Voluntary vs involuntary responses

Voluntary= involves the brain, conscious of the act. eg. talk, lift, walk

Involuntary= activated through reflexes, automatic and no thinking. e.g constriction of pupil in light.

Hypothalamus

Maintains homeostasis, links the nervous and endocrine system, produces hormones that control sleep cycles and body temperature.

Pituitary gland

Acts after hypothalamus prompts it to release or inhibit hormone production.

Thyroid

Regulates metabolism and breaks down food into energy

Parathyriods

Control calcium levels in the bones and blood regulation.

Adrenal glands

Secretes adrenalin in stressful situations, regulates metabolism and blood pressure

Pineal gland

Controls out Circadian Rhythm (body clock) and certain reproductive hormones.

Reproductive glands

Stimulates development of males and females. eg. hair, voice changes, acne

Pancreas

Breaks down food and controls blood sugar levels.

Abiotic vs biotic factors

Abiotic = nonliving things that effect ecosystems. eg. Humidity, wind, light, water, minerals and gases.

Biotic = Any living component in an ecosystem. eg. bacteria, fungi, plants, animals

What is the Carbon Cycle?

The process which carbon is emitted and recycled through the hydrosphere.

What is the nitrogen cycle?

Describes how atmospheric and environmental nitrogen is converted into organic nitrogen to be used by living organisms

What is the energy cycle?

The process by which energy is take from the sun, absorbed by plants through their chloroplasts and use the process of photosynthesis to produce sugars.

What is the cause and effect of greenhouse gases?

Coal burning releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and heat is absorbed into the earth's atmosphere.

What is the cause of the ozone layer depletion?

CFC's are released into the atmosphere, creating higher UV levels = cancer

What is the cause of climate change?

Human expansion of the greenhouse effect, loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise for longer and more intense heat waves.

What compound makes up a Metallic bond?

Metal + Metal

What compound makes up a Covalent bond?

Non-metal + non-metal

What compound makes up a Ionic bond?

metal + non-metal

What is a compound?

A mixture of two elements.

What are some examples of compounds?

Say N2O to Laughing gas, say NaOH to Lye.

What is combustion?

When hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to make CO2 and water. (puts together)

What is Precipitation?

When 2 solutions containing insoluble salt combine and the salt falls out. ( 2 solutions mixed & a solid forms)

What is corrosion?

The gradual destruction of materials. When metals in manufactured states return to their natural oxidation states. (rust)

What is decomposition?

The separation of a chemical compound into elements or simpler compounds. (breaks down)

Exothermic vs Endothermic reactions

Exo= Heat is absorbed

Endo= Heat is released

Both cause energy levels to change

Combustion vs Respiration

C= The energy released is heat

R= the energy released are enzymes and is at a lower temperature.
