2.Funcional mental illness-
is mental illness that does not have a causitive agent to link it to. (example schizophrenia)
what are some symptoms of mental illness?
behavior changes, lack of concern with physical appearance, binge eating, excessive fluid intake, sleep too much of too little, some physical symptoms, itchy but no rash could be mental illness or mental stressor, over-use of defense mechanisms, loss of control with reality, a morbid fascination with death, and someone suddenly becoming mute.

do you have a psyciatric history and you have to ask "is it diagnosed" weither it's them of a family member, have they had treatment and if so what kind of treatment, how do they cope, what factors do they use to cope, how do they funcion daily, if they are compliant how do their families cope, do they feel that there realashionship is being impacted.
Physical assessment when looking to see if a pt has s/sx of mental illness
physical appearence, look at clothing is it age appropriate,example a 80 year old woman wearing a mini skirt, be aware of there mood, decreased physical activity
