Postural Hypotension

AKA orthostatic hypotension... 2nd leading cause of transient loss of consciousness. Drop in systolic, upon standing, or 30mmHg or > or a 10mmHg or greater fall in diastolic pressure...caused by failure in physiological response to change in position... Rarely associated with fear and anxiety.

Predisposing Factors of Postural Hypotension

-Drug administration and ingestion
-Prolonged recumbency... some ill patients who are supine for a long period of time -Age -Venous defects in the legs-severe varicose veins -Pregnancy-using in the 1st trimester when rising from bed or in 3rd trimester if lying supine for several minutes -Inadequate postural reflex-being forced to sit or stand for a long period of time -Addison's disease -Physical exhaustion and starvation -Chronic postural hypotension syndrome(Shy-Drager Syndrome) |
