IDEOLOGY

When the influence of society gives an ideal way of speaking, behaving or looking.

BAUDRILLARD

Hyperreality and simulacra

MULVEY

Coined the term 'Male gaze' in 1975. She believes that in film audiences have to view characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. That women are objects made for men to look at.

STEREOTYPING

Act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people- usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.

REFLECTIVE VIEW OF REPRESENTATION

When we represent something, we are taking its true meaning and trying to create a replica of it in the mind of our audience- like a reflection.

INTENTIONAL VIEW OF REPRESENTATION

This is the opposite of the reflective view.

The person doing the representing is showing their view and the words or images that they use mean what they intend them to mean

CONSTRUCTIONIST VIEW OF REPRESENTATION

Constructionists feel that a representation can't just be a truth or what someone wants you to hear- because it discourages you to have the ability to make up your own mind and opinions.

REPRESENTATION

The way in which social groups, different subcultures, occupations, age, social classes and places are portrayed in the media; and how audiences interpret these portrayals.

BIAS

How the opinions and interests of the Media tend to favour particular points of view.
