Blood agar

Tryptic soy agar with 5% sheep's blood. Supports the growth of most microorganisms. Allows detection of hemolysis

Beta-hemolysis results in an area completely cleared of blood surrounding the colony.

Phenylethyl alcohol agar (PEA)

TSA with phenylethyl alcohol. Selective for gram-positive bacteria. PEA often has blood added

Tryptic soy agar (TSA)

General growth medium. Useful for growing most bacteria

Mannitol salt agar (MSA)

MSA contains 7% NaCl, the sugar alcohol mannitol, and pH indicator. The high salt concentration selects for staph. MSA is differential for S. aureus (yellow color)

MacConkey agar (MAC)

Selective or G-, differential for coliforms which turn the media pink. Useful for isolating G- and identifying coliforms

Eosin Methylane Blue (EMB)

Selective for G-, differential for coliforms which produce colonies with purple to black centers. Metallic green indicates E.coli and some enterobacter. Useful for isolating G- and identifying coliforms.
