How does a non-rebreather mask differ from a partial rebreather mask?
- one-way valve between bag & mask
- 2 one-way valves on exhalation port (1 removed for safety)
What is a transtracheal catheter?
- teflon catheter inserted directly into trachea
- less O2 flow is needed to maintain adequate oxygenation (as little as 0.25 may be needed)
- anatomic reservoir now includes part of trachea
What are 2 types of O2 conserving systems?
- oxymiser cannula & oxymiser pendant
- increases FIO2 & allows primary tank to last longer
What must the total system output (device) be to meet all patient's demands for a high flow system?
- total system output must be at least 3 times the patient's minute volume
- this is due to the 1:2 I:E ratio (all inspiration occurs during first 1/3 of minute volume)
- normal peak flows are about 3 times the minute ventilation
What does a high flow system deliver?
consistent, predictable, & measurable FIO2
What is the criteria for a high flow system?
- patient doesn't meet criteria for low flow system
- VT not 300-700ml
- RR in excess of 25 BPM
- irregular or inconsistent ventilatory pattern
