Which is the better method to choose - displacement in a graduated cylinder or a displacement can?
Displacement in a graduated cylinder because in a displacement can, water gets transferred from one place to another. Whenever you transfer water, some gets left behind which affects the accuracy of your final number. In a graduated cylinder, you don't lose any water. With a displacement can, you do.
Pretend you are going to find the mass of an object. In your head, go through the steps you would take.
1. Zero the balance
2. place object on the pan
3. move the 100 weight
4. move the 10 weight
5. move the 1 weight until the pointer points to zero
6. Add up the weights to get your final answer. (answer should have two decimal places)
Pretend you are going to find the volume of some water. How would you do this?
1. Pour the water into a graduated cylinder
2. Place the cylinder on the desk
3. Bend down to eye level
4. read the volume from the BOTTOM of the meniscus
(there will be one or two decimal places depending on the size of graduated cylinder)
Pretend you are going to find the volume of a small NT coin. How would you do this?
1. Fill a graduated cylinder with water (enough so that it will cover the coin)
2. Read the beginning volume (graduated cylinder on desk, bend down to eye level)
3. Add the coin
4. Read the final volume (graduated cylinder on desk, bend down to eye level)
5. Subtract the difference

Pretend you are going to find the volume of a matchbox. How would you do this?
1. Use a ruler to find the length of the three sides.
2. Calculate the volume by multiplying length x width x height
Pretend you are going to find the volume of a large rock. How would you do this?
1. Assuming it can't fit in the graduated cylinder, then you will have to use a displacement can.
2. Fill the displacement can to the rim with water.
3. Place it gently on the side of a sink and let the water pour out of the spout until all the dripping stops.
3. Place an ampty graduated cylinder under the spout.
4. Gently slide the rock into the displacement can (without splashing!!!)
5. Catch all the water that flows out of the spout into the graduated cylinder.
6. Place the graduated cylinder on the desk. Bend down to eye level and read the volume of water. The volume of water displaced equals the volume of the object.
Why should you tilt a graduated cylinder to the side and gently slide an object in? (2 reasons)
1. If you drop the object in without sliding it gently, then the object may fall right through the bottom of the graduated cylinder!!!! Yikes!
2. Even if the object doesn't fall through the bottom and break the graduated cylinder, it may still cause some splashing. If liquid splashes out then your final measurements won't be as accurate.
