Scientific notation consists of these two factors:
-the Mantissa: the first factor which is in the form of a decimal number with a value range between 1.0 and 9.9
the Characteristic: the second factor in the form of 10ⁿ, where n is an integer.
How are operations in scientific notation done?
Simplify the operations for the Mantissa separately from the Characteristic. ie.
(2x10⁶)(3x10³) = [(2•3)] • [10⁶•10³] = 6 x 10⁶⁺³ = 6 x 10⁹
