Cnidaria phylum |
Jellyfish |
Do jellyfish have a brain? |
They have an elementary nervous system consisting of receptors capable of detecting light, odor and other stimuli and coordinating appropriate responses |
What is the jelly like substance in the jelly fish called? |
Mesoglea (middle jelly) found between the epidermis and the gastrodermis |
How deep have jellyfish been found to live in the ocean (in feet)? |
12,000 feet is the deepest they've been found to inhabit |
An adult jellyfish is called a... |
Medusa |
What do jellyfish eat? |
Carnivorous: zooplankton, other jellys; larger jellyfish may eat crustaceans. |
Who are the predators of jellyfish? |
Spadefish, sunfish, sea turtles, among others |
Cnidoblast |
Specialized venom apparatus the jellyfish have. Nematocysts are capsules within cnidoblasts that contain the stinging structure |
Nematocyst in jellyfish |
Hollow coiled thread with barbs used in the cnidoblast for stinging |
How do jellyfish stingers work? |
Any time they come in contact the Nematocysts are activated and fire into the prey injecting paralyzing toxins. They don't "attack" but if you touch them youll be stung |
What to do if stung by a jellyfish? |
Remove the tentacles carefully as they will continue to discharge venom. Meat tenderizer, sugar, vinegar, sodium bicarbonate can be used. Certain alcohols, picnic acid and human urine can actually cause discharge of Nematocysts causing the sting to be worse and should not be used |
What is the difference between autotrophs and heterotrophs? |
Autotrophs are producers who make their own food, heterotrophs are the consumers who eat that food |
Why do fish swim in schools? |
Defends against predators (they look bigger as one and its harder for a predator to hone in on one fish in a school of them darting different ways). The fish in front can also form an eddy that reduces water resistance from those behind |
Clownfish |
Area: Pacific and Indian Oceans Lifespan: 3-6 years Diet: brine shrimp, small pieces,of fish (eats the anemones leftovers) |
Clownfish vs Anenome (symbiotic relationship) |
Clownfish hell clean the And home and can protect it from some larger predators with its territorial behavior. Anemone provifew a safe hiding places for the Clownfish and food (leftovers) |
Clownfish-where the name came from |
Clownfish will initially allow the anenome to sting it multiple times to get used to it. This repeated intentional elaborate 'dance' the fish will do to get used to the stings results in funny behavior, hence the name |
Clownfish are born (male or female?) |
They are all born male with the largest of the group changing sex to become a dominant female. If she dies, another male will chamge sex to become a female |
Giant Pacific Octopus |
Range: Pacific near the coasts Diet: crabs, scallops, clams, mackerel, smelt Lifespan: 3-6 years |
Giant Pacific Octopus -reproduction |
Soon after the male delivers a sperm packet to the family, he will die within months. Once the female lays strings of eggs (18k-100k) in her den she will die soon after they hatch. This species only mates once. The young hatch the size of a grain of rice |
