What is Friction?
The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
What are the adverse effects of friction in machinery?
Friction has the side effect of dissipating kinetic energy, converting it into heat, which contributes to the inefficiency of machinery.
What is the purpose of lubrication?
Lubrication is the principle of supporting a sliding load on a friction-reducing film.
What is grease?
Grease is oil that, in most cases, has been thickened with soap or lithium to give the oil a
plastic consistency
What is viscosity?
Viscosity is fluid’s resistance to flow
How is viscosity affected by temperature?
Operating at high temperatures oil thins out, and viscosity drops
Operating at low temperatures oil tends to thicken, and viscosity increases
What is meant by the term wet sump?
Constant level of oil is maintained in the housing which is picked up by rotating elements and distributed to bearings and other parts needing lubrication.
What is meant by the term dry sump?
A design in which oil is not retained in a pan beneath the shaft. There may be a remote sump from which oil is recirculated.
How does a slinger ring work?
As ring rotates, oil is carried up from reservoir to points requiring lubrication.
How does a constant level oiler work?
The operation is based on the liquid seal principle: as fluid is depleted in the equipment, the liquid seal on the spout inside the constant-level oiler is broken. When this occurs, air enters into the oil reservoir from the air vent. This releases the fluid from the reservoir and allows it to flow into the equipment until the liquid seal reestablishes itself.
What are the typical components of a circulating lube oil system?
Cooler, Filter, Alarms, & Return Lines
How does oil mist lubrication work?
Pressurized air stream draws oil from reservoir or sump into air stream
Air stream atomizes oil as it is drawn into air stream
Piping distributes mist to lubrication points Re-classifiers increase oil particle size and inject the mist onto the components to be lubricated
Provides a small amount of lubrication, to the right place, all the time
What is the purpose of an oil mist reclassifier fitting?
Re-classifiers prepare mist for application to components
What is a purge mist?
Keeps positive pressure in the bearing chamber of a wet sump.
Why does a purge mist require a balance line?
To insure that the internal housing pressure does not adversely affect the oil level.
