In RC, what is a "Big Picture" question, and what does it ask about? |
A "Big Picture Question" is a Main Pt. & Primary Purpose question. It asks about: 1) The passage as a WHOLE 2) The Bottom Line |
In RC, what must the answer to a "Big Picture" question do? What might a trap answer be? |
The Answer must relate to ALL PARTS of the passage. A good trap answer will be too narrow (or occasionally too broad) in scope. |
When preparing for a question in RC, what do you need to do? What might you ask yourself? |
I need to: 1) Define the Q-task 2) Identify part of the passage that is relevant. 3) Determine what I must do TO or WITH the passage to answer the Q. Do I need to: 1) Summarize something? 2) Extract information? 3) Describe structure? 4) Work with new information? |
In RC, what do "Extract-Fact" questions ask for? How will you approach finding the answer? |
"Extract-Fact" questions ask for something that is EXPLICITLY STATED. I use the margin notes to locate the info that the question is asking about. "GO FIND IT!" Questions ;) **(Often "EXCEPT" Questions). |
In RC, what type of question includes these words in the Q stem? - infer - imply - suggest - the author would/would not agree with |
"Extract-Infer" questions. Prove these by finding the proof in the passage. |
In RC, what do "Structure-Organization" questions ask of you? What must you do? |
"Structure-Organization" questions ask how the passage or paragraph is organized. I must paraphrase the org. in my own words **ALL PARTS of answer must MATCH ALL PARTS of passage, IN THE SAME EXACT ORDER!** |
In RC, what are "Structure-Function" questions? What do they ask, and how do you approach them? |
Structure-Function Q's are "WHY?" questions! They ask about the purpose of a word, phrase, or paragraph. I must paraphrase how the part of the question relates to the passage, then use POE. |
In RC, what are "Reasoning" questions? |
"Reasoning" questions are the "Args-Like" Qs! (i.e. Analogy, Weaken, Strengthen, Assumps, etc.) These Qs go beyond the info in the passage. (i.e. **New Info in the answers!!**) (These may be difficult. Perhaps save 'til second round.) |
In RC, how do you identify the Q task? |
- Translate the Q stems (Make them questions!) - Identify Key Words - Look for passage references |
