Why is low level flying conducted?

To make full use of the cover provided by the terrain itself and to avoid detection by ground-based enemy radar

State when air systems are considered to be low flying

Fixed wing air systems including Tucano are considered to be low flying when operating below 2000 ft AGL/AMSL



Light propellor driven systems and helicopters are considered to be low flying when operating below 500ft AGL/AMSL

What does MSD mean?

Mean Separation Distance- when low flying this is the minimum seperation in all directions, between any part of the air system and the surface or any obstacles

Day time: +/- 15 minutes of booked entry and exit times


Night time: +/- 15 minutes of booked entry and exit times for rotary wing in Night Rotary Regions (NRRs)



Exceptions:


No time tolerances in Night Allocated regions


LFA 12 has no time tolerances


TTAs have no time tolerances (Controlled by local controllers)

Commences: Sunset plus 30 minutes


Ends: Sunrise minus 30 minutes

State the policy when receiving a low flying complaint

Fill in MOD Form 953



Obtain name and telephone number in case the line becomes U/S



Take as much detail as possible when filling in the form



Dictate the call to ensure the complainer does not set the pace or tone of the conversation



Must be polite and courteous at all times and do not accept responsibility or admit liability



Once complete, hand the F953 to a supervising officer. It will then be handed to the low flying complaints and enquiries unit at RAF Wittering
