ALP
alkaline phosphatase (alk phos)-a blood serum enzyme test. Increased levels of alk phos indicate liver disease, cancers & other abnormalities
AST (a.k.a. SGOT)
aspartate transaminase.
Test that reveals levels of enzymes in blood serum. High serum levels of AST may indicate damage to liver cells & muscle tissue, such as in myocardial infarction
BE
barium enema
BRBPR
bright red blood per (through) rectum; hematochezia
CT scan
computed tomography
EGD
esophagogastroduodenoscopy (whew!)
ERCP
endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography
GB
gallbladder
GERD
gastroesophageal reflux disease
GI
gastrointestinal
HBV
hepatitis B virus
IBD
inflammatory bowel disease
MRI
magnetic resonance imaging
NG tube
nasogastric tube
NPO
nothing by mouth ("nulla per os")
PEG tube
percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (feeding tube)
PEJ tube
percutaneous endoscopis jejunostomy tube (feeding tube)
PUD
peptic ulcer disease
SGOT (AST)
SGPT (ALT)
enzyme tests of liver function
TPN
total parenteral nutrition (IV solution containing sugar, proteins, electrolytes & vitamins)
ALT (a.k.a. SGPT)
alanine transaminase.
Test that reveals levels of enzymes (transaminases) in the blood serum. High ALT is especially indicative of acute damage to liver cells (as in hepatitis).
LFTs
liver function tests: ALP (alk phos), bilirubin, AST (SGOT), ALT (SGPT)
