How do you check and test the cooling system?

The header tank is fitted with a sight glass to indicate the coolant level in the tank.

A stop cock and drain cock are fitted to the bottom of the sight glass.

Marks on the header tank are to indicate full and low coolant levels for pressurised cooling systems when the engine is running or shutdown.

What is the purpose of the loco cooling system?

A way to dissipate heat from the engine and control the coolant temperature within predetermined limits.

The coolant is pumped through the engine and to the radiators, through the water pumps and back into the engine.

A header tank is fitted to provide an excess of coolant to keep the coolant system full.

What is the pressurised cooling system cap for?

A handle connected to a pressure relief valve covers the filler cap and when pulled down, vents pressure from the cooling system before the filler can be accessed.

The pressure relief valve must not be opened while the hot engine alarm is operating.

Note: Always relieve the pressure in the system before attempting to remove the pressure cap.

How does a driver determine the amount of coolant in the loco cooling system?

Testing the gauge glass - to test the gauge glass and ensure a true indication of the coolant level is obtained, the driver must:

- close coolant access to the sight glass

- open the drain cock and drain out the coolant

- close drain cock

- ensure top stop cock is open

- re-open lower stop cock fully and observe coolant rise in the sight glass

- compare coolant level with marks on the header tank

How do you fill the cooling system?

Coolant is filled and maintained by maintenance staff.

The water used is specially treated to increase boiling point, decrease freezing point, reduce rust and to lubricate cooling components.

Note: never add water without permission or if the alarm is sounding.
