Phonetic Transcription
Transcription of sounds as actually produced by the speaker
Phonemic Transcription
Transcription of the sounds categories of a language
Diphthong
A vowel with two vowel qualities or targets.
The vowel slides from one position or target in the mouth to a second one.
A diphthong is perceived and produced as a single syllable/vowel sound rather than two vowels
Rising diphthong
Second target has a higher tongue position than the first
Centring diphthong
First vowel quality has a less central tongue position than the second
Complimentary Distribution
When two sounds occur in mutually exclusive (different) phonetic environments. Where one sound occurs, the other one doesn't
What is complimentary distribution used to establish?
Establishes that sounds made in similar places of articulation, and in complimentary distribution, are allophones of the same phoneme
Arbitrariness
There is no logical relation/inherent connection between the phonological form of a word and it's meaning
Regular Sound Correspondence
Similar sounds found in related words from languages that have descended from a common ancestral language/proto-language
Proto-language
The now dead or extinct parent language
Internal Reconstruction
Reconstructing an ancestor or proto-language on the basis of evidence within a single language
Comparative Method
Reconstructing an ancestor language from the evidence that remains in daughter languages
Cognate
Cognate forms are forms that can be traced back to a common root
- Words that have developed from a single, historically earlier source
- Developed from same reconstructed ancestral or proto-language
