Legal and ethical issues of competence
It is o.k. for a therapist to question his/her competence to work with some clients. One way to develp your skill is to work with colleagues or professionals who have more experience than you do. Other way is attending conferences and conventions.gytakind additional courses in areas yo dono know weel and int ehrories that you are not necessarily drawn to, and by participating in workshops that combine didactic wrk with supervison practice. The feeback you received can give ayou an additional resource for evaluation g your readiness to undertake certain theraeutics taks.
training
Trainings programs need to be designed to that students can acquire a more thorough understaidinff of themselves as well as acquire theoretical kownledge. Ideally students will be introduced to varousi content areas, will acquire a range of skills they can utiilize in working with divrse clients, will elarn how to apply theory to rpactice through supervised fieldworkl experiences, and will larn a reat deal avout themselves personally. A goood program encourages studesnt to build on thier life experiences and personal strength and provides oppor;tunity for expanding their awareness of self and others. Ethics should emphsazed through the program because il twill serve during student training and later as professionals.
How can we best train?
effective programs combine academic and personal learning, weave toghether didactic and experientail approaches, and integrate study and practices. A program structured exclusively around teaching academis does not provide important feedback to students on how they function with clients. In experiential learnign and in fieldwork, problems hbehaviors of trainees will eventuallly surface and can be ameliorated. Evaluation is an important component of this process. The policies and procedures pertaining to how students will be evaluated adn how decision wil be made about their advancement or dismissal from a proram should be known by all students.
selection of Traineest:TRAINING PROGRAMS HAVE AN ETHICAL RESPONSIBLITY TO ESTABLISH CLEAR SELECTION CRITERIA, AND CANDIDATES HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW THE NATURE OF THESE CRITERIA WHEN THAY APPLY.
AS PART OF THE SCREENING PROCESS ETHICAL PRACTICE IMPLIES THAT CANDIDATES ARE GIVEN INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WILLB E EXPECT4ED OF THEM IF THEY ENTROLL INTHE PROGRAM. sTUDENTS HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW THE MATERIAL THEY WILL BE EXPECTED TO LEARN AND THE MANNER IN WHICH EDUCATION AND TRAINING WILL TAKE PLACE. wITH THIS KIND OF KNOWLEDGE, STUDENTS ARE BETTER EQUIPPED TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO MAKE A COMMITMENT TO A PROGRAM.
