cyclin-dependent kinases
enzymes that trigger the cell to divide. they are only active when attached to cyclin.
density-dependence inhibition
means that normal cells will know not to divide anymore if they are already surrounded by other cells. In cancer cells this is disabled.
anchorage dependence
means that normal cells will know not to divide anymore if they are not anchored to something. In cancer cells this is disabled.
metastasis
when cancer cells migrate to a new tissue and start a new tumor somewhere else in the body.
RSV
Rous sarcoma virus. the first tumor virus that was discovered, discovered in chickens.
proto-oncogene
a normal gene that codes for proteins necessary to help the cell go through mitosis like it is supposed to.
oncogene
a proto-oncogene that has been mutated so that it is overexpressed, causing the cell to constantly keep dividing.
tumor-suppressor genes
genes that prevent uncontrolled cell division by stopping the cell cycle at certain checkpoints, and by causing apoptosis if something goes wrong
apoptosis
"programmed cell death" when the cell triggers its own death, because something went wrong in the cell that makes the cell dangerous to the organisms (for example, the cell lost control over division)
HeLa cells
cervical cancer cells from Henrietta Lacks. the first human cell line to live indefinitely in culture.
