Deterrence (individual)

A sentence that aims to teach and individual with the aim to prevent more offences within the future.

Any punishment can be deterrent (e.g. a speeding fine)

Incapacitation

The removal of a person from society so they cannot offend against the public.

Prison sentences are a form of incapacitation.

Rehabilitation

A way of reforming an individual and developing new skills to prevent offences in the future.

Community sentences are a form of rehabilitation.

Retribution

Equivalent suffering to the offender to that inflicted to the victim

Reparation

Aims to return a situation to how it was before the crime.

Multiple types of repartition can be charged together.
