3 Rules for Identifying 3rd Dec. Nouns with an i-stem

Masc. & Fem.


1. Nominative sing. ending in -is or -es and the same number of syllables in both the nominative and genitive.

2. End with an -s or -x and have a base ending in 2 consonants (most have monosyllabic nominatives).




nox, noctis (noctium)

3. Nominative sing. ending with -al, -ar, or -e have the i in the genitive plural (-ium) as well as in the ablative sing. and the nom/acc/voc sing (-ia).
