What is a phrase?
A group of words that make sense but not complete senseon their own.

The number of sense groups that can be said on one breath.
What is parentithisis?
When a word, phrase or sentence is inserted as an explaination or asideinto a passage which is gramatically incomplete without it. It is usually marked by brackets, dashes or commas.

What is a pause?
When sound stops.
What is the sense pause?
Used in connected speech to mark the sense by indicating the end or beginning of a sense group.
What is the emphatic pause?
A pause for emphasis that is made before a word or phrase, after a word or phrase, or, for extra emphasis, both before and after a word or phrase.
What is an example of the emphatic pause?
The Ratcathcer by Roald Dahl:

What is the emotional pause?
When the voice is suspended by the strong working of emotions. It must be used subtely or it will sound over-dramatic.

What is the rhythmical/metrical pause?
A rythmical pause is used at the end of lines of verse and between stanzas toindicate the form and pattern of the verse. A ,etrical pause is used when a line of verse is shorter than the surrounding lines so that a pause is needed to balance the rythm and timing.
What is an example of the rythmical pause?
Black Monday Lovesong:

In love's dances, in love's dances,
One retreats and one advances.
One grows warmer and one colder,
One more hesitant, one bolder.
What is the caesural pause?
A slight pause that occurs mid-line in a verse. It is usually marked by a break in sense and sometimes punctuation.
What is an example of the caesural pause?

What is the suspensory pause?
When the last word of the first line of verse is suspended by pitch and length. It is indicated by no punctuation. When it occurs the speaker must preserve the meaning without losing the rythm or form of the verse. They must then continue onto the next line without a breath pause.

What is end-stopping?
Where the sense and rythm in a line falls silent at the end of the line. It is often indicated by punctuation.
What is enjambment?
When the sense of a line of verse continues onto the next line.
What is the difference between end-stopping and enjambment?
They are exactly opposite to eachother.
