Kohaku- white body, red marking

Sanke- white body, red markings, black overlay

Showa- black body, red and white markings

Utsuri- ‘reflective ones’ black body, white, red or yellow markings

Bekko- coloured base, black marking. Clean head and either red, white or yellow

Asagi- blue grey pattern on top, red trim below. One of the first koi bred 1850

Shusui- 'autumn green' 1910 cross breed of asagi and mirror carp. Doitsu, blue grey pattern on top, red trim below.

Ai goromo- white body, red marking with indigo edge.

Sumi goromo- white body, red marking with a black edge.

Budo goromo- white body, red markings overlayed with black creating a grape-like appearance.

Goshiki kohaku- ‘five colours’. These koi were bred from Asagi and kohaku, they have the red and white colours of the kohaku which overlays a two-tone asagi, net-like, body colouration.

Goshiki Sanke- ‘five colours’. These koi were bred from Asagi and Sanke, they have the red, black and white colours of the sanke, which overlays a two-tone Asagi, net-like, body colouration. This photo is of a Tancho koi (head dot)

Goshiki Showa- ‘five colours’. These koi were bred from Asagi and Showa, they have the red, black and white colours of the Showa, which overlays a two-tone Asagi, net-like, body colouration.

Hajiro- Kawarigoi, black bodied, white tips to the tail and fins.

Hageshiro- Kawarigoi, black bodied, white tips to fins similar to Hajiro, but have a white head and face.

Kumonryu- Kawarigoi, ‘Dragon Fish’ is a black doitsu koi with swirling white markings on its head and body, a pattern which changes shape seasonally.

Benigoi- Kawarigoi, dark red

Kigoi- Kawarigoi, yellow

Soragoi- Kawarigoi, blue-grey. belied that these koi grow rapidly and are less skittish that other types of koi. This trait helps to settle and tame other koi in their pond.

Midorigoi- Kawarigoi, green

Shiro muji- Kawarigoi, white

Chagoi- Kawarigoi, brown-green, brown. belied that these koi grow rapidly and are less skittish that other types of koi. This trait helps to settle and tame other koi in their pond.
