15 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
shoulder joint
ball and socket
loosely fitted
3 major GH ligaments to protect and stabilize plus others in area
muscles also protect and stabilize
rotator cuff- small muscles stabilize and assist mov't
rotator cuff
supraspinatus
infraspinatus
teres minor
subscapularis
movements of shoulder joint
flexion (and hyper)
extension (and hyper)
abduction
adduction
external rotation
internal rotation
horizontal adduction/abd
circumduction
muscles of the shoulder joint
superior: Deltoid and supraspinatus
anterior: pectoralis major, coracobrachialis, subscapularis, biceps brachii
posterior: latissimus dorsi, teres major, infraspinatus, teres minor, triceps brachii
deltoid muscle
anterior fibers: abduct, flexion, horizontal adduction and internal rotation
posterior fibers: abduct, extension, horizontal abduction and external rotation.
middle fibers: abduct
superior supraspinatus
weak abduction (action), stabilization of humeral head of glenoid fossa

origin: supraspinous fossa of scapula
insertion: superiorly on greater tubercle of humerus
pectoralis major muscle
upper fibers (clavicular head): internal rotation, horizontal adduction, flexion and adduction (w/ are below 90 degrees, upper fibers assist in further adduction)
lower fibers (sternal head): internal rotation horizontal adduction, extension, adduction
ANTERIOR coracobrachialis
flexion (sagital), adduction (frontal), no rotation (horizontal adduction)

origin: coracoid process of the scapula
insertion: middle of the medial border of the humerus opposite the deltoid tubercle
ANTERIOR subscapularis
internal rotation, adduction (frontal), sagital (extension), stabilization of the humeral head in glenoid fossa

origin: subscapular fossa on the anterior surface of the scapula
insertion: lesser tubercle of the humerus
ANTERIOR biceps brachii
main action at elbow
origin: long head: superglenoid tubercle on the superior edge of the glenoid process of the scapula. short head: coracoid process of the scapula
insertion: radial tuberosity

flexion of shoulder, flexion of elbow, supination of forearm
latissumus dorsi
adduction (frontal), extension (sagital), internal rotation (transverse), horizontal abduction

origin: posterior crest of the ilium, back of the sacrum and spinous processes of the lumbar and lower 6 thoracic vertabrae slips from the lower 3 ribs
insertion: medial lip of the inertubercular groove of the humerus
POSTERIOR teres major muscle
extension: particularly fro mthe flexed position of the posteriorly extended position
internal rotation
adduction: particularly from the abducted position down to the side and toward midline of body

origin: posteriorly on the inferior third of the lateral border of the scapula and just superior of the inferior angle
insertion: medial lip of the intertubercular groove of the humerus

MINOR: external rotation, extension, hor abd
POSTERIOR infraspinatus
external rotation, horizontal abduction, extension, stabilization of humeral head in the glenoid fossa

origin: infraspinous fossa
insertion: posteriorly on the greater tubercle of the humerous
POSTERIOR triceps brachii
3 heads
origin: long head: infraglenoid tubercle below inferior lip of glenoid fossa
insertion: olecranon process of ulna

~all heads extension of elbow
long head: extension, adduction of shoulder joint
rotator cuff muscles (SITS)
Supraspinatus: attach to greater tubercle from above (abduct)
Infraspinatus: attach to greater tubercle posteriorly
Teres Minor: attach to greater tubercle posteriorly
Subscapularis: attach to lesser tubercle anterior
