He is now talking about the Birlings as an outsider. This suggests that he is not part of the family even though he would like to be as he is rather persistent |

Gerald is putting the "woman" in her place as he believes he is superior and that women shouldn't be subjected to such harsh truths. This is showing the divide between genders in the early 1900's. Gerald also seems to be acting sarcastically towards Sheila, showing that he doesn't respect her when it comes to issues that are solely for men and could be too harsh for her |
