Mnemonic technique

Memory assisting technique such as giving arbitrations meaning.

Proposition

The smallest unit of knowledge that can stand as a separate assertion (the smallest unit one can meaningfully judge as true or false).



Propositional representation

The representation of knowledge such as a complex sentence which is encoded as a set of abstract units of meaning that represent the simple assertions in the sentence. The meaning of the propositions correspond to the meaning of the complex sentence and the propositions can be rearranged without losing the meaning of the complex sentence. The propositions contain relations (verbs, adjectives, relatives) and arguments (nouns).

Amodal symbol system

System where knowledge is represented as abstractions, such as the model of propositional representations. Because of this one does not remember the exact wording or details on a picture.

Embodied cognition

Perspective that emphasizes that meaning is represented in both perceptual and motor systems that we use to interact with the world. Imaging studies: activation of motor cortex parts when listening to verbs. Two hypothesis: multimodal & amodal.

Multimodal hypothesis

Embodied cognition representation proposes that the relation between information in perceptual and motor systems is bidirectional in terms of conversion from one representation to another and back. Visual-->motor-->visual.

Amodal hypothesis

Embodied cognition representation proposes that the relation between information in perceptual and motor systems are abstacted into an abstract meaning system. These abstract representations can be converted into any modality and any motor or perceptual representation can be converted into an abstract representation.

Semantic network

The hypothetical hierarchy of semantic memory that proposes that various categories are stored in a network of levels with categorical facts for a category that are true for lower levels. Reaction time is larger for verifying assertions when having to traverse several links.

Schema

A representational structure, a category that contains slots important for the category and default values which are possible attributes of the concept. Proposed to be the way knowledge about concepts is represented. Members of a category varies in degree of typicality.

Script

Schema for events which contains sequence of prototypical actions, important for memory of stories.

Abstraction theories

Theory proposing that conceptual knowledge is stored as abstraction derived from specific instances, and specific instances are judged in comparison to this general abstraction.

Exemplar theories

Theory proposing that conceptual knowledge is stored as a specific instance which serves as a template for general properties for the category.
