Naming/Circumcision

Bar Mitzvah/Bat Mitzvah

-means "son of commandment"
-celebrated when boy turns 13 -now considered an adult in Jewish religion - boy studies and prepares for day - happens after the 1st Sabbath on the boys 13th birthday -when a girl turns 12 she celebrates her Bat Mitzvah - means "daughter of commandment" - both services are followed by a joyful reception |

Marriage

-important because family plays such a prodominent role within Jewish tradition
-seen as more preferable to marry another Jewish person ( it's believed that difficulties might arise if a Jew marries someone who doesn't understand their culture) -most weddings take place in a synagogue conducted by rabbis -bride and groom stand under canopy (Chuppah) - drink from glass of blessed wine -groom gives bride ring, crushes glass with foot. |

Death

-funerals usually take place within 24 hours of death
- body cannot be cremated because it's the belief that we're destroying what God created -believe in life after death, although not very important(more important to focus on present) - Shiva: 7 day period of mourning following the period - after funeral, 1st shiva candle is lit, mourners eat a small meal, family members don't leave house during shiva, recite the Kaddish(mourners' prayer) |
