Phase 1 (0-2 months)

Instinctively direct attachment to human figures. Anyone can elicit smiling/crying

Phase 2 (2-6 months)

Attachment focused on one figure. Usually primary caregiver. Baby gradually learns to tell familiar and unfamiliar people apart.

Phase 3 (6 months-4 yrs)

Specific attachments develop. Locomotor skills allow baby to seek contact actively with regular caregivers.

Phase 4 (3-4 yrs onward)

Becomes aware of peoples feelings, goals and plans. Take these things into account when directing their own actions. Seperation anxiety dissipates bc they understand parents leave and come back

Strange situation

Infants experience series of intros, seperations and reunions with caregiver and adult stranger. Test and observe degree of emotional attachment to caregiver.

Insecure avoidant

Show insecurity by avoiding mothers

Insecure resistant

Cling to caregiver, then resist her by fighting against the closeness (by kicking/pushing)

Insecurity by disorganized and disoriented reactions.
