Phase 1 (0-2 months) |
Instinctively direct attachment to human figures. Anyone can elicit smiling/crying |

Attachment focused on one figure. Usually primary caregiver. Baby gradually learns to tell familiar and unfamiliar people apart. |

Phase 3 (6 months-4 yrs) |
Specific attachments develop. Locomotor skills allow baby to seek contact actively with regular caregivers. |

Becomes aware of peoples feelings, goals and plans. Take these things into account when directing their own actions. Seperation anxiety dissipates bc they understand parents leave and come back |

Infants experience series of intros, seperations and reunions with caregiver and adult stranger. Test and observe degree of emotional attachment to caregiver.
