What are the main 4 tools in the wireline?
Rope socket (connects tool to winch); stem (it adds weight); jars (hammer); and knuckle joint (provides flexibility).
What is the primary barrier in wireline?
The stuffing box.
What is the secondary barrier in wireline?
The wireline BOP.
What is the tertiary barrier in wireline?
The wire-cutting valve.
What are the primary and secondary barriers if the wire is cut?
The primary barrier is the internal BOP at the stuffing box. The secondary barrier is the swab valve.
What is the name of the type of connection in wireline?
Quick union.
Can a quick union made up by hand cause a leak path?
No, they are designed to be hand tied.
What is the minimum test pressure for wireline?
Closed-in tubing head pressure (CITHP).
Why do we mount the BOP directly on to of the tree for slickline?
To have easy access; to reduce potential leak paths; and to maximize the length of tools we can run.
When do we have to close the BOP?
To repair anything above that is leaking; when we have to drop the cutter bar to cut wireline); and to thread broken wire over the stuffing box back to the reel.
When do we pick up additional BOPs?
When fishing so we have a BOP for each diameter of wireline.
When do we pick up more lubricators?
When fishing to accommodate the fish.
Where is a stuffing box used?
Only for slickline. Braided line uses a grease head.
What do we need to check on the gland nut before RIH?
We must ensure there is some adjustment on it.
What are grease nipples used for?
To lubricate the bearings on the stuffing box.
What is the vent valve used for?
For chemical injection.
What do we need to do before opening the BOP?
Equalize the pressure?
What is the seal gate?
It is a tool to guide the wire to the seal when closing the BOP.
Which connections do we rig up to for closing the BOP?
Outer connections to push in the pistons.
What steps are involved in closing the BOP with wireline across?
Pump rams close; lock the rams close; bleed off; inflow test; pick up lubricator.
How many rams do we need for braided line?
Two. The top one contains well pressure from below and the bottom one contains grease pressure from above for the seal.
What is the ram configuration in braided line jobs?
Normal braided ram. Inverted braided ram. Shear ram seal.
What are the steps to pressure test the BOP for braided line?
Open all rams; insert test rod; close rams (seal); pressure from grease seal inlet.
Are the inner seals for braided and slickline the same?
No, braided seals have a groove across them.
What is the configuration that replaces the stuffing box on braided line jobs?
We use a grease head and three flowtubes underneath.
What are the names of the conduits above and below the BOP for braided line?
Above we have lubricator joints and below we have the riser.
Where is the safety check union installed?
It is located immediately below the grease head. It is the primary barrier for braided wire that has been cut and out of the conduit.
