Why did the Sunni and Shi’a split occur?

After the death of the Prophet Muhammad, and there was disagreement over who should have led the Muslim community. Sunni Muslims accepted the authority of the Abu Bakr (the first rightly guided khalifah). Sunni Muslims felt Ali should have been the leader because he was raised in Muhammad’s house.
