Preparation steps in intubation

1. assess airway and neck for potential contraindications


2. Pre-oxygenate the patient


3. Place a functioning suction device and bag-valve-mask at the bedside


4. Attach necessary monitors (BP/O2/HR)


5. Establish IV access x 2 cannulas


6. Prepare necessary medications

Equipment required for RSI


  • laryngoscope handle and assorted blades
  • endotracheal tubes and stylet - tubes sizes from 7 to 8.5
  • sterile lubricant for the distal balloon - syringe for inflation
  • ETT introducer or bougie
  • oral and nasal airways
  • LMA (rescue) airways
  • end-tidal CO2 monitor

dose = 1.5-3 mg/kg
