What is the minimum number of test groups needed in a lab experiment? Why? |
At least two test groups are needed so the conditions can be compared |
What is an independent variable? |
The independent variable is what the researcher manipulates in an experiment. It creates the difference between the control groups. |
What is the dependent variable in a lab experiment? |
The dependant variable is what the researcher measures. |
What is cause and effect? |
To be able to say one thing directly causes another to change. |
Think about independent and dependent variables. |
What are the three different types of experiments? |
Laboratory, field and natural. |
What happens to extraneous variables in lab experiments? |
An attempt to minimise them is made, but this is not always possible. |
Why are standard procedures used? |
To make sure each participant has the same experience and so the experiment can be replicated to make sure it is reliable. |
Who conducted the Bobo doll experiment and in what year? |
Albert Bandura conducted the Bobo doll experiment in 1961 |
What is the social learning theory? |
The social learning theory is that social behaviours are learnt through observation and imitation. |
What is live modelling? |
Live modelling is when an individual demonstrates behaviour in real life in front of the participant. |
When did Bandura think imitation was most likely to occur? |
Bandura believed we have a higher chance of imitating someone if we share characteristics with them such as gender because we feel we have a similar chance of receiving the same outcome. |
Did Bandura think imitation was automatic? |
No he did not, he believed that we think about the consequences of our actions and then decided whether to imitate or not depending on the outcome. |
How does internal validity relate to lab experiments? |
Lab experiments have high internal validity because the cause and effect of people's actions can be measured by the independent and dependent variables. |
How do demand characteristics effect a lab experiment? |
Participants of a lab experiment show high levels of demand characteristics because they act how they think they are wanted to act. This can effect the reliability of the results. |
