NHTSA
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Each sate has a control of it's own EMS system, independent of the federal government. However, NHTSA provides a set of recommended standards called "Technical assistance program assessment standards."

P.A.S.P.
Public Service Answering Point. A caller takes and collects, verifies and records the information about the meergency, decides which service must respond and facilitates alerting the necesary service.
E.M.R.
Emergency Medical Responder.
Provides immediat lifesaving care, uses basic airway, ventilation, and oxigen therapy devices, takes patient vital signs, provides stabilization of the spine and supected extremity injuries, eye irrigation, bleeding control, emergency moves, CPR, automated External Defibrilator, and emergency child birth care.

Paramedic
Scope of practice, includes EMT and AEMT, perform advanced assessments, from a field impression, and provide invasive and drug intervention as well as transport. designed to reduce dissability and death of patients.
Pre-Hospital Care
Emergency medical treatment given to patients before they are transported to a hospital or other facility.
Roles & Responsibilities of EMT
Personal safety, safety of EMs crew, patien and bystander safety,patient assessment, emergency care, safe lifting and moving, proving oral and written reports, safe transport of the patient, transfer of patien care, record keeping and data collection, patient advocacy.

Patient Advocacy
You are responsible for protecting the patient's rights, protect the patient's privacy, collect and safeguard valuables. Notify family and honor reasonable requests from patient.
Medical Director
Physician who is legally responsible for the clinical and patient care aspects of the EMS system, He is involved in Education programs, refresher courses, overseeing and providing continuing education, and facilitating the quality imporvement system. Responsible for providing Medical Direction which are referred to as Protocols.
Protocols
Full set of guidelines that define the entire scope of medical care. Oftend referred to as orders, protocols may consist of both off-line and on-line medical direction
Off-line medical directions
Predetermined, written guidelines that allow the EMT to use his or her judgment to administer EM care without contacting a Physician
no direct communication needed.
On-line Medical Direction
Requires permission froma physician prior ro administering specific emergency care
direct communication.
Standing Orders
Do not require Physician input, synonymous with off-line medical direction. Treatments that can be performed if communication cannnot be established or is lost with medical direction.
Quality Improvement
Identiy aspects of the system that can be improved, not to evaluate individual performance, not to be used as a penalty tool but as evaluation system geared toward overall system improvement. EMT roles include, Documentation, Perform reviews and audits, Feedback, maintain equip, continuin education, maintain skills.
