Abductor Pollicis Brevis

Origin: Flexor retinaculum and lalteral pillars of carpal tunnel (scaphoid and trapezium)

Insertion: Lateral side, base of proximal phalanx and extensor hood of thumb

NS: Motor recurrent branch of Median nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Thumb abduction

Flexor Pollicis Brevis

Origin: Flexor retinaculum and tubercle of trapezium bone

Insertion: Lateral side, base proximal phalanx; sesamoid bone at head of 1st metacarpal

NS: Motor recurrent branch of median nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Thumb flexion

Opponens Pollicis

Origin: Flexor retianculum and tubercle of trapezium bone

Insertion: Whole length 1st metacarpal bone (palmar surface and lateral margin)

NS: Motor recurrent branch of Median nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Thumb opposition (Rotates 1st MC medially and draws thumb toward center of palm)

Adductor Pollicis

Origin: Oblique head- Bases of MC 2 and 3; Capitate and Trapezoid bones

Transverse head- Anterior surface shaft of MC 3

Insertion: Medial side, base of proximal phalanx and extensor hood of thumb; sesamoid bone at head of 1st MC

NS: Deep branch of ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Thumb adduction

Abductor Digiti Minimi

Origin: Pisiform bone; tendon of FCU and pisohamate ligament

Insertion: Medial side, base of proximal phalanx of little finger; DDE

NS: Deep branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Abduction of little finger

Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis

Origin: Flexor retinaculum and hook of hamate bone

Insertion: Medial side, base of proximal phalanx of little finger

NS: Deep branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Flexion of little finger at MP joint

Opponens Digiti Minimi

Origin: Flexor retinaculum and hook of Hamate bone

Insertion: Medial margin and palmar surface of shaft of MC 5

NS: Deep branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Draws 5th finger forward and rotates it laterally for opposition

Palmaris Brevis

Origin: Flexor retinaculum and palmar aponeurosis (medial margin)

Insertion: Skin on medial side palm; Blends with fascia over hypothenar eminence (both attachments are soft)

NS: Superficial branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: tenses skin over hypothenar eminence and deepens the hollow of the hand

Lumbricals

Origin: Tendons of FDP:

#1 and 2 are unipennate muscles; lateral side of FDP tendons to index and middle fingers

#3 and 4 are bipennate muscles. Adjacent sides of FDP tendons to middle and ring, and ring and little fingers

Insertion: Lateral side of the DDE to fingers 2,3,4,5

#1- into DDE lateral side of index finger

#2- into DDE lateral side of middle finger

#3- into DDE lateral side of ring finger

#4- into DDE lateral side of little finger

NS: #1 and 2- median nerve (C8, T1)

#3 and 4- deep branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: MP flexion, IP extension

Dorsal Interossei Muscles (Bipennate)

Origin: Adjacent sides of 2 MC bones:

#1 adjacent sides of MC 1,2

#2 adjacent sides of MC 2,3

#3 adjacent sides of MC 3,4

#4 adjacent sides of MC 4,5

Insertion: Base proximal phalanx of fingers 2-4 and DDE

#1 lateral side of index finger

#2 lateral side middle finger

#3 medial side of middle finger

#4 medial side of ring finger

NS: Deep branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Abduction of fingers 2,3,4 at MP joints;

MP flexion, IP extension via DDE of digits 2-4

Palmar Interossei Muscles (Unipennate)

Origin: Palmar surface (shaft) of MC 1,2,4,5

medial side MC 1, 2

lateral side MC 4,5

Insertion: Base proximal phalanx, fingers 1,2,4,5 and DDE

Fingers 1,2 medial side

Fingers 4,5 lateral side

NS: Deep branch of Ulnar nerve (C8, T1)

Action: Adduction of fingers 1,2,4,5 at MP joints; MP flexion, IP extension via DDE of digits 1,2,4,5
