Purpose & Preparation

Gather information about situation; understand the process (what) and how it normally happens. Facts of issue point to what root cause. Facts re materials/environ/eqmt present, facts re time window of event

|
Identify specific questions based on what did happen; who = involved or potentially involved and why involved - purpose of being there

|
Anticipate interviewee reaction; both logical and emotional responses, reactions to questions. Always keep a poker face even if surprised, they'll think you already know this.

|
Monitor behavior, attitude, eye contact, manner, body language, social environment, be aware of cultural influences and responses. Does what you see match what you hear?

Why and what would motivate them to behave this way; greed/profit, power, revenge, anger, jealousy, crazy/mental deficiency - Rx?

|
Flight mode, uses silence to withhold info, withdrawls, masks with sarcasm or sugarcoats, avoidance, little eye contact, says yes means no, other person villian

Response is Violence
|
Fight response, angry or protecting something, controls conversation/others, labels others ideas, comments. Verbal attacks others, ideas, comments

Indications of Truthfulness
|
Similar detail throughout remarks, expressions of thoughts, emotions in behavior. Out-of-sequence info, primary memory stimulates secondary memories

Indications of Deception
|
Varying levels of detail - intro - main event - epilogue. Perfect chronology of event, rehearsed or spontaneous. Absence of thoughts emotions. Time gaps in account, implied action phrases

Require Clarification
|
Use open ended questions; sketchy details, illogical or unexplained behavior, time gap phrases "next thing I knew"

Clarification 2
|
Implied action phrases "I wanted to leave". People not identified "we went to". Conversations "I was on phone a while". Qualifying phrases "I believe, I recall"

Use Closed end question for specific info, position or answer. Forces deceptive subject to offer incriminating evidence or lie. "Who might be involved taking $ from location"
